YPI Canada’s Statement of Solidarity

The YPI Canada team  expresses our solidarity with, and love for, our Muslim friends, family members, colleagues, teachers, students, non-profits, and all Muslim community members across Turtle Island. We denounce the ongoing white supremacy, Islamophobia, violence, and racism that led to the abhorrent hate crime that killed four members of the Afzal family, and left their young child orphaned and critically injured last Sunday in London, Ontario.

We share our solidarity with, and love for, the 2SLGBTQ+ community as members and allies. We condemn the homophobic assault and hate crime that was committed against a young adult in Toronto on Saturday.

We honour the lives of the Indigenous children who were murdered by Canada’s racist and abusive Indigenous residential school system, including the 215 children whose unmarked and undocumented graves were uncovered recently, when the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation hired a ground-penetrating radar specialist to investigate the site of the former Kamloops residential school, guided by the knowledge of survivors. We share our solidarity and love with the survivors and intergenerational survivors of Canada’s residential schools, who are living the enduring trauma and harm of its legacy, and yet are being forced to fight for truth and justice. We oppose current racist policies and discriminatory practices against Indigenous Peoples, we recognize their rights to sovereignty, self-governance, and self-determination, and we add our voice to the demands for the immediate implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and the MMIWG Calls for Justice
