To provide high school students with a reality experience through a strong academic philanthropy program which gives them the skills to assess community needs and make grants to charitable, grassroots organizations meeting those needs. Our program will empower youth to actively participate in the development of their communities, engage them as dedicated problem solvers and volunteers. Our program will promote a sense of responsibility, respect and a commitment to building compassionate communities.
The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) is unique in its reach and its impact. Grade 9 and 10 students receive an education like no other and they play a direct role in making a financial grant to a local, grassroots social service organization. YPI is incorporated into the curriculum of participating high schools and teaches students the fundamentals of philanthropy. Can it help students feel more connected to their communities? It most certainly can. Does it help support local grassroots, social service charities? Just ask YPI students - it most certainly does
YPI is a combination of in-class learning and practical, hands-on experience. Students develop an awareness of social needs and get to know their communities. They gain an appreciation of the social challenges faced by others and develop their ability to help. Along the way, students acquire research, teamwork, communication and presentation skills.
And guess what? Teachers develop tomorrow's philanthropists right in their classroom. They also get an opportunity to participate in a cutting edge initiative and satisfy curriculum requirements.
